Loathing

I can feel the darkness like a lover
Its smoky fingers slip into my ears
To caress my brain
Encircling my mind and squeezing,
Controlling my thoughts.
Darkness is all I see,
All I feel,
All I taste.
When light pulls me away,
Inky fingers blind me and drag me back,
Enslaving me.

The darkness is an escape that leaves me empty,
An embrace that leaves me lonely,
A map that leaves me lost—
Purring in my ear when I try to leave,
Promising joy, but offering only tears,
Promising love, but delivering disgust.
It’s everything I hate, so why can’t I break free?
The more I try to run,
The more ensnared I become—
Wrapped in the arms of darkness,
Straining for the light.
